A recession always spells good news for the DIY industry.

First Time Home Owners, keen to keep bills up  but reluctant to pay the price of hiring a qualified tradesman to do the job, will spend their evenings and weekends ambling through hardware stores.

For most, home owners is a hobby, a constructive option to while away the hours, with a sense of achievement gained through assembling some bookshelves from scratch or building a cupboard to the house those bathroom accessories.

Sadly, in many cases, the desire is not matched by the capability, and such projects, although treasured by the creator, are often left half-finished, but are at least a great topic of conversation at dinner parties and family gatherings.

Although DIY is regarded as a great British past-time, it should not be an option for those considering selling their home in the near future.

As the property market is in such strait, with the crisis on the market large percentage of homes now remaining on market for at least 90 days or even don`t sell for a long time, and it is vital that a house available for viewing is presented at its best, to increase its chances of attracting the best price in the shortest time possible for sale.

Renowned contemporary furniture on the house gives a new look and  it will be presentable to the buyer, caution before ploughing ahead with DIY projects.  “Estate agents tell vendors that half-finished or botched home improvement jobs are likely to dissuade potential purchasers from putting in a realistic offer. No-one wants to invest in a property which will obviously require substantial repair work or even replacement work to be carried out on sub-standard fittings. Our advice to homeowners, first time home buyers  is to invest in a reputable, experienced craftsman from the outset. It needn’t break the bank and could well spell the difference between a home sitting on the market for months and a successful sale.”

“A qualified and a good carpenter will assess your needs, whether it be space-saving solutions, shelving requirements or storage, in addition to considering the style of your home and the budget available”. “Before you do any work you have to check if they are a member of the relevant guilds and offer a guarantee on all work completed. Finally, and of equal importance, they should also discuss ideas, plans and progress with you at every stage of the project. In this way, you can be sure that you are adding to the value of your home, giving you a return on investment”.
